How to Safely Give a Puppy a Shower

How to Give a Puppy a Shower (Safely & Gently)

1. Check the Age First

  • Under 8 weeks: ❌ Do not give a full shower. Use a warm, damp cloth instead.
  • 8 weeks and older: ✅ A gentle shower is okay.

2. Get Everything Ready

Have these items before you start:

  • Puppy-safe shampoo (never human shampoo)
  • Soft towel
  • Cup or handheld shower
  • Non-slip mat (very important)
  • Treats for rewards

3. Use Warm (Not Hot) Water

  • Water should feel lukewarm, like baby bath water.
  • Cold or hot water can scare or harm puppies.

4. Wet the Body Slowly

  • Start from the neck down
  • Avoid eyes, ears, and nose
  • Speak calmly so your puppy feels safe

5. Apply Puppy Shampoo

  • Use a small amount
  • Gently massage into fur
  • Do not scrub hard—puppy skin is sensitive

6. Clean the Face Carefully

  • Do not pour water on the face
  • Use a damp cloth to wipe gently
  • Keep water out of ears to prevent infection

7. Rinse Very Well

  • Leftover shampoo can cause itching
  • Rinse until water runs clear

8. Dry Immediately

  • Wrap puppy in a soft towel
  • Gently pat dry (don’t rub hard)
  • In cold weather, use a dryer on low heat (keep distance)

9. Give Praise & Treats

  • Praise softly
  • Give treats or cuddles
  • This helps puppies enjoy bath time in the future
